It reminds me of my grandma.

My Grandma Rose wasn’t a great cook, but there were two dishes she excelled at: pineapple upside-down cake and apple pie. So, when my family and I spotted a double crust apple pie at ALDI’s, we had to see how it stacked up. Sspoiler alert: we really liked it.

ALDI’s Bake Shop 10-Inch Double Crust Apple Pie

  • Price: $5.99 for a 10-inch pie
  • Why I Love It: The combination of buttery, flaky crust and cinnamon-spiced apple filling is simple, yet incredibly comforting. I especially loved the pie warmed up with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Why I Love ALDI’s Bake Shop Double Crust Apple Pie

My parents were visiting from out of town, and I needed a quick dessert when I discovered this pie in the baked goods aisle at my local ALDI. For only $5.99, I got a 10-inch double-crusted pie billowing over the tin.

My mom—who remembers my grandmother from scratch crusts—Ioved the crust's texture. It reminded her of my grandmother’s, she said. “I think the crust is really beautiful. The apples also taste quite fresh.”

My dad decided that the best way to eat it was to warm up a slice in the microwave and add a scoop of vanilla ice cream. My mom agreed that the apple filling tasted better warmed up.

My 15-year-old son said it was good enough to eat right from the pan and wanted to take most of the pie on an upcoming road trip with his dad to a diving meet. I allowed him to grab a piece to go, but really needed to keep the leftovers for further taste testing.

I was impressed with the combination of the buttery, flaky crust with the oozing apple goodness of the filling. I agreed with my parents—warming it up in the microwave is totally the way to go with this pie. It paired well with vanilla ice cream, although I think cinnamon ice cream would also be delicious.

The box the pie comes in says there are nine servings, and I believe that’s accurate if you cut smaller slices. My son, however, could eat a quarter of it in one sitting, and he says the pie would be a delicious, out-of-school-for-summer breakfast.

The best thing about this pie is that it’s good enough for company. If you took it out of its aluminum tin and put it in a ceramic one, your friends and family wouldn’t be able to taste the difference.  It probably comes as no surprise, then, that I’m grabbing this pie the next time I have a fancy dinner party.
