Some ready-to-eat meals sold at Kroger and Walmart stores have been recalled nationwide in relation to a deadly listeria outbreak, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The products are manufactured by FreshRealm.

What Caused This Recall?

FreshRealm is recalling chicken fettuccine alfredo products that may be contaminated with an outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes. FSIS and its public health partners are currently investigating a listeria outbreak that has caused three deaths and 17 illnesses across 13 states.

According to the FSIS, the listeria strain was found in people who were ill from August 2024 through May 2025. The same strain was found in a routine chicken fettuccine alfredo sample collected from FreshRealm in March 2025.

The FSIS also used receipts from two people who were sick to trace the products to FreshRealm. Two other sick people described buying chicken fettuccine alfredo products that matched the descriptions of the now-recalled meals.

Symptoms of Listeria Poisoning

Eating food contaminated with Listeria can cause listeriosis. This bacterial infection can be life-threatening, particularly in infants, people over 65, and those with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms vary depending on the person and the severity of the infection, but can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and headache.

If you're in one of those higher-risk categories and you experience flu-like symptoms after eating potentially contaminated food, head to your doctor.
