Popular Ice Cream Sold at Walmart and Dollar Tree Recalled for Undeclared Allergen

Here's what to look for.

From a food safety perspective, July has not been the best month for ice cream. Shortly after an unrelated recall for listeria contamination, Tropicale Foods recalled many of its Helados Mexico and La Michoacana ice cream products.

This recall affects ice cream treats sold in Walmart locations in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., as well as products sold at Dollar Tree stores. (It may affect ice cream sold at other stores, too, but we're still working to confirm that.)

What Caused the Recall?

Tropicale Foods had to recall its frozen treats because the labels didn't say that the product contained milk.

Because milk is one of the eight foods that cause 90% of allergic reactions, this kind of labeling error could have scary consequences. So far, one consumer has reported an illness related to this undeclared allergen.

The company reviewed all of its product labels and discovered 14 products that contained cream but didn't declare milk as an allergen on the label.

You can imagine how a labeling error like this could lead to serious issues for someone with a milk allergy, intolerance, or sensitivity.

The recall announcement shared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) lists the following products, UPCs, and best by dates.

What To Do With the Recalled Ice Cream

If you or someone in your family is lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy, discard any recalled La Michoacana or Helados Mexico products. You may be able to return the product to the store for an exchange or refund. If you can eat dairy products, then this ice cream is still safe to eat.
