One of my son’s favorite new foods is bagels. He’s been eating them for years, but now it seems he can’t get enough of them, and as a 15-year-old athlete, he is eating all the time. So, I’m constantly picking up bags of bagels and recently found a new favorite from Aldi: L’Oven Fresh Hawaiian Bagels.

Aldi L’Oven Fresh Hawaiian Bagels

  • Price: $1.89 for a 20-ounce bag with six bagels
  • Why I Love It: These Hawaiian roll-inspired bagels are soft and pillowy with a hint of sweetness. I love eating them in the morning with cream cheese, and I also use them to make sandwiches.

Why I Love Aldi’s L’Oven Fresh Hawaiian Bagels

I recently discovered this new variety of L’Oven Fresh bagels in the bread section of my local Aldi. Since we regularly buy both bagels and Hawaiian rolls, this mash-up of two of our favorite bread products was immediately enticing.

A six-pack of bagels costs only $1.89, or about 30 cents per bagel. $1.89 is way cheaper than other brands of Hawaiian bagels, which cost more than $3 per package.

True to the two products that inspired them, these bagels are soft and pillowy with the sweetness of classic Hawaiian rolls. My son noted that the texture is less dense than that of a regular bagel. “They’re not as hard,” he says.

As a sports mom, I’m going to have to feed my son’s entire junior varsity volleyball team at some point during the season, and I think two packages of these, plus some cream cheese, would be an affordable snack for a morning tournament.

How My Family Enjoys These Bagels

The bagels are also slightly sweeter than regular bagels and taste perfect when toasted with cream cheese. A flavored cream cheese, like strawberry, would also be a good choice.

My son prefers them with butter and jam since the fruitiness of the jam complements the flavor of the bagel. My husband likes them with a little bit of peanut butter, since peanut butter toast is his favorite breakfast.

I’ve also used them to make breakfast sandwiches with bacon, egg, and cheese. They would also be great for French toast because they’re sweet, or as a base for breakfast casseroles or even bread pudding.

What I also like most about these bagels is that they can go beyond breakfast. The bagels are great for making sandwiches—ham or turkey with cheese, veggies, and ranch dressing are two of my favorite combinations.

I recently used them as a substitute for buns when I made hamburgers after realizing I had forgotten to purchase any. It turned out to be a surprisingly good alternative. Next time, I'm considering adding a slice of grilled pineapple.

Overall, L’Oven Fresh Hawaiian Bagels have quickly become a pantry staple in our house. Their versatility lends itself to countless meal options. These bagels always hit the spot. Plus, you can’t beat the price!
